Epicanthus hypothesis의 토대를 이루고 있는 근본적 전제는 ‘idea of recapitulation’을 원리로 성립된 후성설적 발생학 및 ‘idea of Hemmungsbildung(arrested development)’을 원리로 성립된 기형학으로서 둘다 19세기 초반 메켈(Johann Friedrich Meckel, 1781~1833)이 정립한 것이다. 이 중 ‘idea of recapitulation’은 가장 기초를 이루는 사변적 가설(speculative hypothesis)이었고, 이 발생학적 논리가 지지되지 못하면 ‘Hemmungsbildung Lehre’ 와 ‘epicanthischen Lehre(epicanthus hypothesis)’도 순차적으로 무너질 수밖에 없다.
