commemorate (공식적으로) 기억하고 존경을 표하다 commemorate 는 동사로 특별한 방식으로 중요한 사람 혹은 이벤트에 대한 기억에 존경을 표하다 라는 뜻입니다. 보통은 뭔가 역사적인 사건이나, 공식적인 기념행사 등에 많이 쓰이는데요.
영한사전에는 (중요 인물·사건을) 기념하다 라고 되어있네요. 그런데 한국어에서는 '기념하다'라고 하면 좋은 일에만 쓰이잖아요 보통?
commemorate는 꼭 그렇지 않습니다. 슬픈 일이지만 기억할만한 일이라면 commemorate 할 수 있는거에요.
