어떤 저자들은 Mongolian fold와 Epicanthus 가 같은 것이라고 하고, Fuchs등은 epicanthus가 몽고인종의 normal characteristics 이라고 하지만 이는 호도되기 쉽다. 잘 발달된 epicanthus는 다른 인종보다 Mongolian에서 유의하게 많이 관찰되지 않았고, Motais가 잘 지적했듯이 Mongolian에서 흔히 보이는 fold는 band(passes obliquely from the skin of the upper lid to the side of the nasal bridge without curving downward and again outward as in epicanthus)이다.
Motais는 이를 bride라 불렀다. 64명의 캘리포니아 중국성인에서 57%에서 fold(in the sense of Motais)가 있었고, 3-10세 사이의 중국인, 일본인 아동 30명 중 50 %에서 fold를 관찰 할 수 있었고 3명...
